What does the future of artificial intelligence entail?
“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race” (Stephen Hawking, 2014). Concerned quotes like this or images from the “Terminator” come to mind when most people think about the future of artificial intelligence. But instead of bringing humanity to extinction, AI will make life easier and benefit us.
First off AI will actually prevent deaths instead of causing them. By empowering self-driving cars traffic accidents will be reduced. 2012 there were over 30.000 deaths caused by motor vehicle crashes just in the U.S. which autonomous cars can prevent. Additionally the 210.000 to 440.000 deaths caused by medical error can be prevented by using intelligent systems providing better patient information.
AI also presents the opportunity to have machines do dangerous and risky work. Second AI will be integrated into nearly every aspect of our daily lives though we will not always be aware of it. Intelligent systems will help us save time, energy and stress by managing lives.
They will be our personal assistant doing adminstrative work like scheduling appointments, answering the phone or shopping for us. Most devices in our homes will be connected to each other, automating daily activities like making some coffee in the morning while taking a shower.
Lastly AI will change the healthcare system and benefit the elderly, disabled and sick. We will have caring robots that will assist the elderly reminding them to take their pills or help with daily activities like buying the groceries. It will also enable people with disabilities to live more independently. This makes clear that artificial intelligence will benefit people in many aspects of life and will change the world as we know it.
