What Is The Main Cause Of Poverty In Ukraine?

While most European countries thrive, those in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) fail to match the pace in poverty reduction rates. It happened due to rising inequality and poverty due to the significant corruption and the absence of effective civil institutions (The World Bank) which in the case of Ukraine was complicated with inner military conflicts and government uncertainty.

Before 2014, the poverty rates were declining in Ukraine (The World Bank), though the quality of life was below average. In 2013, the unsatisfied citizens rioted against the corrupted government and drove the president from office. The following events were a disaster to the country’s economy. At the beginning of 2014, two major regions of Ukraine that accounted for a significant portion of the country’s GDP declared their independence. It lead to a full-scale military conflict within the country. In the May of 2014 Russia annexed Crimea (UNDP). According to Institute of Demography and Social Surveys, the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, the ratio of the population under the poverty almost doubled from 28.6% in 2015 to 58.3% in 2016 (EurAsia Daily). Naturally, these two conflicts combined with a newly established government that was not able to take immediate control of situation caused an economic recession, and the quality of life of Ukrainian citizens dropped significantly.

Summing it up, the primary cause of the current huge rates of poverty was the inability of the newly established government to deal with the inner military conflict and Crimea’s annexation in a post-revolutionary setting.
