Technology Essay on Drones

technology essay

Also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, UAV1 for short, drones present both undeniable advantages, as well as dramatic downsides. Therefore, there should always be the human factor that one takes into account for acting responsible on the use of drones and keeping the balance between the pros and cons in order to avoid unnecessary harm. Thus, it is not the drone in itself we ought to charge as guilty, but the man power operating it.

Looking on the bright side first, we have to admit that drones are extremely useful as part of the preventive force necessary in contemporary military engagement. Drone manoeuvring is relatively simple and highly accurate. They also offer the great benefit of being ready for action, ranging from precautionary surveillance to direct attack, at any time, be it day or night. According to Sarah E. Kreps2, author of the book Drones. What Everyone Needs to Know, Americans tend to love drones, assuming that they are used in combat against dangerous militants.

On the other hand, if we are to take into account the possibility of killing innocent civilians by means of drones, their popularity certainly drops. Drones are not intelligent and sometimes they make war seem too easy, almost like a video game. An article in The Guardian3 introduces a 30-minute long movie shown at the Imperial War Museum in London in 2013 and depicting the activity of drone operators. The author emphasizes one of the main ideas emerging from this piece of contemporary art aimed at opening our eyes to the cruel truth: the men behind the desk make mistakes and death is overwhelming.

In conclusion, based on the above mentioned arguments and examples, one could not but agree with the original point I made in the introduction. Drones are machines, they do have an excuse. It is the moral question burdening the shoulders of drone operators that the public should become aware of.
