How Do You Picture out the “Afterlife”? How Does it Look Like?

“The Divine Comedy” by the Italian writer Dante Alighieri gives us answers to those questions. In this poem, Beatrice is a key character. Since this poem is allegorical, analyzing Beatrice’s role will enable us to better understand how Dante views the afterlife.

First, we identify who she is in literal sense and how she affected Dante’s life. He dedicated his poems to Beatrice Portinari, his first love (Cummings). His works showed his admiration towards her beauty and kindness which demonstrated “the nature of his feelings for her” (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica). Having Beatrice as his inspiration, it is no wonder that Dante would create a character who was shaped out of her.

Beatrice, in the poem, left her seat in the Heaven to ask Virgil to guide Dante in his journey from Hell to Paradise. She did this out of love for Dante. Throughout his journey, the promise of meeting Beatrice served as Dante’s inspiration to finish his journey until Paradise. When they finally met, she guided him in ascending towards God.

In allegorical sense, Beatrice represented faith and grace as she was the one who saved, motivated, and guided Dante to finish his journey from Hell and Purgatory towards meeting God. Without faith and grace, it might have been impossible for him to finish his journey.

In this poem, Dante created a picture of afterlife: just like how he met and was guided by Beatrice, the one who made an impact in his life and who served as his inspiration, there is a possibility that we can experience the same thing, too.
