Limiting Technology Use Before Bedtime And Maintaining A Dark Bedroom Can Help Cure Insomnia

Technology is taking people away from natural living. Though technology significantly improved the quality of our lives, the invention of electronic gadgets such as computers and cell phones introduced its downsides that are leaving people with addiction and several technology related disorders, for example, computer vision syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome (Kohli).

The major negative side of the technology was started with the introduction of light-emitting screens as the eyes are not made to see the light source directly. The screens of electronic gadgets are causing sleep deprivation or insomnia in two ways. The light from the screens is bright enough to the eyes to signal the inhibition of melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone, which is produced efficiently in dark surroundings. The other way is mental awakening by the content from the objects such as an interesting video, browsing or social networking (Smith). However, other mental issues, such as technology-associated constitutive mental alertness, also causes irregular sleep patterns, which vary from person to person. So, it is highly recommended to keep yourself away from your computers or the cell phones at least an hour before going to bed and during sleep to have a sufficient amount of sleep and rest.

Our body is made to synchronize with nature’s light patterns from the sun called circadian rhythms, which again depends on the light detection in the eyes and melatonin secretion. This is the main reason why most of the wildlife sleeps with darkness and awake with early morning’s sun rays. Unfortunately, starting from the invention of making fire, man have been receiving artificial light during unusual times, the nights, which sends signals to keep us awake, disrupting the circadian rhythms and sleep. Though sleeping in the presence of light gives many people a feeling of good night sleep, it has long term effect on both physical and mental health (Dvorsky). So, it is advised to sleep in complete darkness to avoid sleep-related health issues.
