Essay on Jesus Christ – Who Is He?
Christ is not a name or a surname, but a translation from Hebrew into a modern Greek or Aramaic language of the Hebrew word “messiah”! Today in some Christian churches it is considered that with the coming of Jesus, that is, the establishment of the New Testament, the Old Testament was completely abolished. That is, today for a number of denominations the Old Testament scripture became more historical, sometimes even allegorical material, and not a statement of the will of God for modern people. Just note that in Orthodoxy and Catholicism there is no such dogma. Jesus Christ is a key figure for people of different religions, but what was his mission? Who Is Jesus Christ and What Was His Mission to the World?
Jesus Christ is the Son of God who became man to save mankind from sin and for people to enter Heaven and have an eternal life. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (New International Bible, John 3:16). Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem during King Herod’s rule in the city of Jerusalem. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, who, at that time, was engaged to be married to Joseph.
The genealogy of Jesus is depicted in Matthew 1:1-17 (Joseph’s record) and Luke 3:23-38 (Mary’s record). The Lord tasked Jesus Christ to fulfill an important mission here on earth. He anointed his precious Son “to proclaim good news to the poor… to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (New International Bible, Luke 4:18-19). To help him in the mission, Jesus called Simon, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Thaddeus, Bartholomew, Thomas, James, Matthew, Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot to become his apostles.
During his public ministry, which started after his baptism, Jesus Christ performed several miracles such as healing leapers, calming the storm, walking on water, catching 153 fish at the Sea of Galilee, feeding 5,000 people, condemning the rich for exploiting the poor, and telling parables.
More than 2,000 years ago, God sent his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to save and sanctify people and to move them away from sinful acts. That was, is, and will always be the greatest news the Bible has conveyed to the humanity.
