The Namesake Analysis

Published by at 5:28 pm under Essays,Samples

The Novel ‘Namesake’ describes the struggles and hardships of a couple from Bengali, India, who migrate to Unites States to start a life a new, in a completely different environment from what they are accustomed to in their homeland (Lahiri and Nair 10). Upon arrival to their new land, they are both faced with challenges and both have different experiences to go through. Ashoke, one of the main characters of this novel and is married to Ashami, finds it more appealing to be in United States and he adopts rather quickly, compared to his wife Ashami. Ashoke’s dream of an engineering degree is achieved while in the States, he goes ahead to secure a job with the New England College. It is so fulfilling for Ashoke to have his dream realized and also securing a job (Canton 56). Ashami is affected by this immigration in a more negative way. She rejects anything American and does not want to be a part of this ‘funny’ culture. It would probably be wise enough to portray her as confused.

The issue of cultural clash affect Ashami so much that she does not know where she belongs. She wants to remain a part of the Indian community (where she had been born and brought up) but that is not happening in the current situation and the geographical location she finds herself in. She literally does not know how to answer when a person asks her where she comes from, since that would result in yet another question based on physical appearance and even on her name (Lahiri and Nair 11). Ashami seems to be more affected by the whole issue of immigration to United States; her experience would be described as isolating and painful. This is seen when she tries to make Indian friends in the suburbs of Boston and starts to bank on her husband and her children to bring happiness to her. She obviously misses misses her family back in India and all the sweet memories she had in India so much that she is utterly consumed with this loss of roots.

In her life it is clear that she misses her family back in India and all the sweet memories she had in India as well. When the family was getting into America, it was in the middle of winter, the weather was completely different, she was used to warm and pleasant weather of india which is also so humid, in America, she is greeted and welcomed by the cold weather season of winter something that she had never experienced in her entire life, her husband Ashoke too is affected by the change of climate and they both had to take time to adapt to these unfriendly climatic conditions (Canton 12).
